A pair of studies, the results of which were published in the journal Pediatrics, suggest that early intervention could greatly reduce the number of individuals who deal with obesity.

The first study analyzed how infants respond to food during the first three months of life. Researchers learned that a hearty appetite at a young age was an early marker for weight gain. A second study took a closer look at infants’ genes and their reaction to satiation.

The two studies both hinted that by identifying risk factors for obesity early on — well before a child’s first birthday — obesity could made far less likely.
