Team USA finished second in overall medals with 28, nine less than the 2010 Vancouver games. Although Norway and Canada placed third and fourth in the overall medal count, they topped Team USA’s nine golds by winning 11 and 10, respectively.

Things didn’t go well for Team USA in various events, including failing to medal in individual figure skating for the first time since 1936 and taking home no medals in speed skating, which last happened in 1984.

All the most famous trio of athletes for the U.S. — snowboarder Shaun White, skier Bode Miller and speed skater Shani Davis — had to show for in Sochi was a single bronze medal between them.

As for the most medals won by a single athlete at the Winter Olympics, the honor goes to Dutch speed skater Ireen Wust who won two gold medals and three silver. In fact, the Netherlands totally dominated speed skating, winning 23 medals overall in the sport.

Perhaps more important than any other aspect of the games, Russian security managed to prevent a terrorist attack, which was on everyone’s minds in the weeks leading up to the Sochi Winter Olympics.
