Steven Stamkos to Miss the Winter Olympics
(NEW YORK) — Team Canada will be missing one of its premier forwards in Sochi.
The Tampa Bay Lightning announced that forward Steven Stamkos has not been medically cleared to play this weekend and will not compete in the Winter Olympics.
Stamkos broke his leg in a Nov. 11 game against the Boston Bruins. He had a CT scan done on his leg Wednesday afternoon, and doctors determined that his right tibia was not healed.
“Although the doctor was very pleased to this point with the healing process, he explained that the callus surrounding the fracture site is not 100 percent consolidated, and Steven will not be cleared to play in a game until that happens,” Lightning and Team Canada general manager Steve Yzerman said. “It was a pretty clear-cut decision, no gray areas at all.”
Stamkos is expected to be evaluated in two to three weeks. He has 14 goals and nine assists in just 17 games for the Lightning this season.
