(HAILEY, ID) – Federal hunters are pursuing two wolves they believe are responsible for killing a horse near Hailey. Kevin and Jennifer Swigert say they lost their young colt nearly two weeks ago. Wildlife officials say they were surprised to learn about the attack, given that wolves are known to only rarely kill horses. Wolves are linked to hundreds of livestock deaths around Idaho each year, and are being blamed for a dramatic reduction in the size of central Idaho’s elk herds. An estimated 680 Canadian grey wolves now live in Idaho after a few dozen were introduced to the area in the early 1990s.
