In what could be considered a big victory for the FDA, nearly all of the drug companies that sell antibiotics for growth promotion in animals have informed the agency that they will comply with its recent voluntary guidance to stop using antibiotics in animal feed without a prescription from a veterinarian.

About 80 percent of antibiotics sold in the U.S. are used in farm animals to plump them up and prevent illness. The announcement may bring consumers one step closer to combating antibiotic resistance in humans.
