Bears Release Julius Peppers

Dilip Vishwanat/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — The Chicago Bears released eight-time Pro Bowl defensive end Julius Peppers on Tuesday.
Peppers was one of the biggest free agent signings four years ago, but the move allowed the Bears to free up $18 million in the salary cap.
“We appreciate Julius’ contributions to the Bears over the last four years,” Bears GM Phil Emery said in a statement. “He was a leader on our defense starting every game since coming to Chicago.”
“His accomplishments over his NFL career place him among the best defensive ends over the past 20 years. The Chicagoland community has benefited greatly from his quiet generosity. We wish him the best,” the statement continued.
Peppers finished with only seven sacks last season, his lowest in four seasons in the Windy City.
