“The pursuit started at around 7:12 a.m. in Longmont [Colorado] this morning when Adams County Sheriff department received a call about the stolen vehicle… It ended in Douglas County over an hour later,” Colorado State Patrol Public Information Officer Nate Reid told ABC News.

Reid said that the suspect struck a Colorado State Patrol trooper on E-470 as he was attempting to stop him.  “The trooper is at the hospital now with serious injuries,” Reid told ABC News.

He said that the stolen vehicle that contained the boy has been recovered and the child is safe.  The unidentified suspect is also in custody.

ABC News affiliate ABC7 News Denver said that the boy was left in a running red Ford Edge at a Bradley gas station at 1750 Main St. in Longmont just after 6 a.m. and “that surveillance video showed a blond man wearing a yellow and black jacket in the gas station around that time.”

“Around 7:15 a.m. the stolen red minivan was spotted by Adams County Sheriff going southbound Interstate 25 in Thornton. The troopers pursued the vehicle as the suspect got on and off the highway and went through several neighborhoods before getting on Interstate 76,” said Reid.

Aerial video of the pursuit showed the suspect driving at high speed and coming close to hitting several cars while swerving in and out of traffic and at times driving on the shoulder.

The video shows the suspect using the red minivan at E-470 to block a gold minivan. When the two people inside the gold minivan got out, he carjacked it and headed the wrong way on I-76.

Moments later, the suspect sideswiped a silver BMW, then pulled a woman from the driver’s seat to carjack her vehicle. That ended with the car crashing at an intersection into another car and the suspect running off, pursued by police.

“The woman pulled to the ground is doing okay,” said Undersheriff Tony Spurlock of Douglas County said during a press conference held after the incident.

“[The suspect] does have a warrant for his arrest and he is facing numerous charges out of Longmont for our incident and all the incidents along the way,” Jeff Satur with the Longmont Police Department told ABC News affiliate ABC7 News Denver.

“The suspect is in the hospital and we’re trying to find out if intoxication is involved,” said Spurlock.

Satur also said the child was checked by medical personnel and his parents were expected to reunite with him at the Brighton police station.
