“The first shipments of our parts are going to arrive at the dealer the week of April 7. And we expect to have one million replacement parts in the field by the end of August,” Jeff Boyer, GM’s newly appointed vice president of global vehicle safety, told ABC News Radio on Friday.

The recall was announced last month but was later expanded to include four more models. The vehicles affected are the 2003-07 Saturn Ion, 2006-07 Chevrolet HHR, 2006-07 Pontiac Solstice, 2006-07 Saturn Sky, 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt and 2007 Pontiac G5.

The problem with the ignition switch in these cars could cause their engines to power down without warning while in motion. And without power, GM says the car’s airbags could also fail to deploy upon impact.

Boyer says part of his job is to find out why the recall came 10 years after GM was aware of the problem, which has been blamed for a dozen deaths.

“That’s exactly the question that we need to have answered,” he says.

GM is launching a website, 1-800 number and twitter account for owners with questions.
