Sizemore, 31, hasn’t played since 2011 and has underwent seven surgeries since 2009.

Despite his past health issues, Sizemore has stayed healthy this spring hitting .333 with one home run in 39 at bats.

“He looks very good physically,” Red Sox skipper John Farrell. “Left-handed and right-handed pitching, he had a good swing. He’s in a good place.”

Sizemore beat out youngster Jackie Bradley Jr., who will start the season at Triple-A Pawtucket.

Sizemore is a three-time All-Star, with a .357 on-base percentage, 139 home runs and 439 RBIs through eight seasons of big league play.
