Tax Tip: Filing for an Extension

GETTY 32714 Taxes? SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1395924557325robeo/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — With the April 15 tax deadline fast approaching, you should be close to having all of your paperwork ready to go. But if that’s not the case, don’t worry: You can file for an extension.

“I love filing for the extension. It gives people a chance to do things properly,” says tax accountant Janice Hayman.

She says the Internal Revenue Service allows you another six months — until Oct. 15 — to fill out your forms.

“The IRS website is wonderful, and you can absolutely find information about form 4868, your tax extension, right there on the front page,” Hayman notes.

While your paperwork can be put off for another six months, your tax payment cannot be delayed. You still have to pay your estimated taxes or face a penalty and interest on the outstanding amount.
