Two Americans Arrested in Bahamas in Fatal Stabbing
(BERKS COUNTY, Pa.) — Two American men were arrested in the Bahamas in connection with the stabbing death of another American man there, police said.
The body of 45-year-old Carl Yerger was discovered Friday morning on the grounds of Bimini Big Game Club Resort & Marina on the island of Bimini.
Tyler Michael Valles, 19, of Key Largo, Fla., and Robert Francis Schwarz, 62, of Gaylordsville, Conn., were arrested in connection with the death, Bahamian police said. The men were arraigned Tuesday on manslaughter charges, but investigators have not revealed a motive for the alleged killing.
A family member of Valles told ABC News the teenager was a “good kid who has never been in trouble” and was in the Bahamas for a fishing tournament.
Both Valles and Schwarz were crew members on a boat that was docked at the resort, police said. It was not clear whether the two men knew Yerger.
The family member, who asked not to be identified, told ABC News that Valles told the family that Yerger broke into their boat and “seemed really out of it.”
“Tyler chased him off and Yerger came back and that’s when an incident occurred,” said the family member, relaying this unverified account. “That’s all we have heard at this point.”
Yerger, of Ruscombmanor Township in Berks County, Pa., was married with two young sons. He reportedly had gone to the Bahamas on a fishing trip with his best friend and business partner.
Yerger co-owned a successful milling business and was president of his local youth league, where he coached baseball and basketball.
Bail has been set at $35,000 each for Valles and Schwarz, and they’re due back in court in May.
A Friday tribute to Yerger posted on the Oley Valley Youth League’s website on Friday described Yerger as “a great man” and “our friend, president, and benefactor,” adding: “Carl led the Youth League since December of 2012. In that time, he inspired everyone he met and energized the small but tight knit sports community of Oley.”
