“Captain America” Follow-Up, “Superman/Batman” Film to Open Same Day
Published at(LOS ANGELES) — Marvel announced Monday that the follow-up to the record-setting Captain America: The Winter Soldier will fly into theaters on May 6, 2016. That happens to be the same day that the untitled Superman/Batman film starring Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck is slated to debut in theaters.
Variety notes that most Hollywood observers anticipate that one of the two films will give up the date “since they would no doubt cannibalize each other if both opened at the same time,” decreasing box office revenue for both films.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier, with Chris Evans reprising his role as Captain America, earned an estimated $96.2 million in its debut last weekend. That’s an April debut record, surpassing the $86.2 million made by Fast Five in 2011. The film has earned over $300 million worldwide.
