Oliver’s stock in the TV world rose after he filled in for Jon Stewart as host of The Daily Show last summer. He says his departure from the program didn’t come as a surprise to Stewart.

Speaking with ABC News Radio, Oliver recalls that before Stewart went on hiatus, Stewart told him, “We’re going to need to talk…because it’s going to be difficult to go back to what you were doing.”

Oliver says Stewart has been very supportive of him and his new venture: “Every step of the way he’s been amazing with his advice. The amount of time he has given me to talk about things when I know how precious his time is, I will be forever grateful. He’s an incredible man.”

Last Week Tonight launches Sunday night at 11 p.m. Eastern time.
