Burley Idaho airport fails FAA standards

BURLEY, Idaho (AP) – The Federal Aviation Administration says a small southern Idaho airport doesn’t meet federal standards, and some locals fear the facility could close.
The Times-News reports the FAA has agreed to fund a new study to look at possible relocation sites for the J.R. “Jack” Simplot Airport in Burley. But the federal agency also warns that the study will be the last one it funds for the airport.
Steve Engelbrech with the FAA says both runways at the airport lack appropriate safety zones. If the airport isn’t relocated or fixed, it could lose federal funding. Then the city would have to pick up the full cost of running the airport or close it down.
Previous attempts to relocate the airport were thwarted by land-use disagreements.
