Cardinals Send Struggling Starter Shelby Miller to the Bullpen

SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1405805125058Major League Baseball(NEW YORK) — St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Shelby Miller is having a hard time duplicating the success he had in his rookie season, so the team has decided to move him to the bullpen so he can also get more rest during the season.

“How long that lasts, I’m not going to say [it will be through the end of] the month,” Cardinals manager Mike Matheny told MLB.com‘s Jennifer Langosch. “We’ll see how guys look and feel. He’s ready to go [in the bullpen]. As far as how we use him, it’s how we need him.”

Miller was third in the NL Rookie of the Year voting last season when he went 15-9 with a 3.06 ERA.

The results this season have been mixed at best for the 23-year-old Miller. In 19 starts this season, he’s gone 7-8 with a 4.29 ERA.

The Cardinals plan on using a four-man rotation for the time being and could potentially do so until August depending upon how the schedule plays out.
