“Forty-one percent of American homes, that’s two in five American homes, are wireless only,” says Stephen Blumberg of the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics, which has been studying phone use for a decade.

Blumberg notes that the biggest predictor of whether or not someone has a landline depends on if the person owns or rents property.

“Renters are more than twice as likely as owners to be wireless only,” he says.

But despite the number of households that are wireless only, the pace of people cutting their landlines is slowing. This could be because it’s cheaper to get cable, Internet and phone packages from many cable companies rather than just cable and Internet.
