League sources said that a verbal offer was made to Scott after he spoke with Lakers owner Jim Buss on Thursday night.

Scott played for the Lakers from 1983-1993 and again in 1996-97 season, winning three NBA Championships while playing with Magic Johnson. In more than 13 seasons as a head coach, Scott has roamed the sidelines with the New Jersey Nets, New Orleans Hornets and Cleveland Cavaliers. He was hired in 2010 by the Cavaliers just days before LeBron James left for Miami and spent the last four seasons in Cleveland.

Superstar Kobe Bryant, who played with Scott as a rookie in 1996, gave his endorsement of the hiring. The Lakers have not had a coach since Mike D’Antoni resigned back in April. Scott becomes the fourth head coach for Los Angeles since 2011.
