“I appreciate the opportunity the Orlando Magic has afforded me and my family over the past 10 years,” Nelson said. “All good things must come to an end, however, and it’s time to move on. I look forward to continuing my career as an NBA player and will never take for granted my time in Orlando.”

Had the team kept the veteran around a few more weeks, they’d have to pay him the $8 million dollars he’s due for next season. Now the team will owe him $2 million in guaranteed money.

The 32-year-old Nelson is the Magic’s franchise leader in assists, second-all time in games played and field goal attempts, and third in minutes played. In 651 games played for the Magic, Nelson averaged 12.6 points and 5.4 assists per game.

Nelson was the 20th pick in the 2004 Draft by the Denver Nuggets, but was traded to the Magic on draft night. In his senior season at St. Joesph’s, Nelson was the National Player of the Year.
