NJ Gov. Chris Christie Vetoes, Rewrites State Gun Control Bill
Published at(TRENTON, N.J.) — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Wednesday vetoed a gun control bill that would have banned ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds, saying that the bill represented “reform in name only.”
Christie said in a statement that he would return the bill to the legislature with suggested changes to the state’s mental health system and eliminating the reduction in ammunition magazine capacity.
Christie suggested reforms that include improved treatment for those suffering from mental health crises, new standards for involuntary commitment, improved standards for outpatient treatment, an end to “clinical oversight,” firearm license reviews and expanded crisis training for first responders.
“Mass violence will not end by changing the number of bullets loaded into a gun,” Christie said. “It will end with a serious commitment to elevating our response to mental illness, a declaration that we will not let our discomfort with this disease threaten our children, our families, and our communities.”
