Severe Turbulence Sends Passengers Flying from Their Seats
Published at(JOHANNESBURG) — A South African Airways flight has landed safely in Hong Kong Wednesday after the aircraft was struck with severe turbulence that left 20 people injured, the airline said.
According to a statement from the airline, medical personnel met the plane at the Hong Kong airport to assist the 17 passengers and three crew members injured on Flight 286, which had departed Johannesburg Tuesday.
An infant was among the injured passengers, the airline said, and two of the people onboard sustained serious injuries. Some of the injured have already been released from the local hospitals treating passengers and crew in Hong Kong.
The turbulence occurred as the aircraft flew over Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian capital. Interior panels of the aircraft were damaged and the plane’s cabin was cracked during the incident.
