Thirteen Injured in Food Truck Explosion Caused by ‘Significant Leak’ in Propane Tank

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(PHILADELPHIA) — Police say that the explosion at a food truck on Tuesday evening was caused by a “significant leak” in an unused propane tank.
The incident occurred at about 5:40 p.m. on Tuesday, Philadelphia police say, at an unidentified food truck. In total, 13 people were taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment, five of whom are listed in critical condition.
The truck was open for business at the time, and police say witnesses reported smelling propane before the explosion.
Police recovered the exploded propane tank about 95 feet from the truck.
The truck was properly licensed. Among the injured were individuals sitting on the steps of a home across the street from the truck and at least four truck employees. At least five people injured were released from hospitals by Wednesday night.
An investigation involving the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms’ Arson and Explosives Task Force is ongoing.
