Many Italians are incredulous that Schettino, who is on trial for causing a shipwreck, abandoning ship, and multiple manslaughter, was invited to the university. Thousands have taken to Twitter to express their fury and lament how bad the incident makes Italy look.

Criminology professor Vincenzo Mastronardi was one of the seminar organizers who says Schettino’s lawyers tricked him into inviting the captain to the seminar after they learned the scholars would be discussing the case. He says he now regrets the decision.

Thirty-two people died when the Costa Concordia crashed off the coast of Tuscany on Jan. 13, 2012. Divers say they may have recovered the remains of the final missing person.
