Iraqi Prime Minister Steps Down
Published at(WASHINGTON) — Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki announced on Thursday that he would step down from his position and allow new Prime Minister-designate Haider al-Abadi to take over the position.
In a statement, National Security Adviser Susan Rice called the move “another major step forward in uniting” Iraq. The White House praised Maliki for his decision to join a range of leaders in supporting al-Abadi’s selection as the next prime minister.
Much work remains, the White House said, as al-Abadi attempts to build an inclusive government with “an agenda that can address the needs and legitimate aspirations of the Iraqi people.”
