Macy’s Pleads No Contest to 2009 Death of Employee
(LOS ANGELES) — Macy’s has pleaded no contest in connection with the 2009 death of an employee at an East Los Angeles distribution center.
According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Roy Polanco, 68, was working at a Macy’s distribution center on July 13, 2009, when he fell into an unguarded opening of a cardboard baling and compactor machine. He was crushed to death within the machine.
As part of a settlement, Macy’s will pay a $950,000 fine at an August 2015 sentencing hearing. The company must also conduct an audit of all such machines at their stores and distribution centers in California. That audit must be approved by the District Attorney’s Office.
