Phillips had been out of action since July 11 after undergoing surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb.

“I would not say he’s 100 percent like brand-new and that may not be until spring training of next year,” manager Bryan Price said. “But he’s definitely good to play.”

The Reds could certainly use Phillips back in the lineup. They’ve been slipping in the standings in recent weeks, losing eight out of their last 10 games and trailing the first-place Milwaukee Brewers by nine games in the NL Central.

Now in his eighth season with the Reds, Phillips is hitting .269 with seven home runs and 40 RBIs in 87 games this season.  He made his return to the team Monday.
