Robin Williams Died in Apparent Suicide by Hanging
Published at(LOS ANGELES) — Robin Williams died by asphyxia due to hanging in what was an apparent suicide, the Marin County, California Sheriff’s Department has announced.
At a Tuesday afternoon press conference, Lt. Keith Boyd, chief deputy coroner of the Sheriff’s office, said Williams’s wife, Susan Schneider, left the couple’s home at about 10:30 a.m. Monday, believing her husband to still be asleep. Williams’ personal assistant became concerned when he couldn’t reach Williams, and gained access to a bedroom, where Williams was discovered, clothed and in a semi-suspended, seated position, hanging from a door with a belt around his neck.
There were also acute, yet superficial cuts on the inside of Williams’ left wrist, and a pocket knife was found nearby. The cuts were determined to be unrelated to the cause of death.
Officials arrived after a 911 call from a person who was not identified, and who said Williams had apparently committed suicide. Williams, 63, was pronounced dead at 12:02 p.m. Officials say there was no sign of a struggle. They would not say whether Williams left a note.
The official cause of death will be determined pending toxicology results. The investigation is ongoing.
