His birdie on the final hole put him one shot ahead of both Jim Furyk and Jason Day.

“I scored well, but the golf wasn’t quite as pretty as yesterday at times, neither was the weather, obviously,” said McIlroy after rain delayed day two for almost an hour. “Played well for the most part. There were some key up-and-downs to keep the momentum going in the round.”

The top golfer in the world recorded an eagle, four birdies, and two bogeys in his second round. McIlroy has won each of his last two tournaments, including the British Open, and is a combined 41 under par in his last 10 rounds.

Day had the best Friday round of anyone, posting a 6-under 65 to close to within a stroke of the leader. Furyk also shot well while Ryan Palmer, Rickie Fowler, and Mikko Ilonen all sit at 7-under after two days.

One week after withdrawing from the WGC-Bridgestone, Tiger Woods struggled with back pain and recorded his second straight 3-over to miss the cut at 6-over for the tournament. It is just the fourth time that Woods has missed the cut in a Major.

“It was sore. No doubt about it,” Woods said after totaling a 6-over 148 to miss the cut by five strokes. “It went out on me on the range. Just had to play through it.”
