The statement, released by State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki, said that the United States is “appalled” by the “disgraceful shelling” outside the school, which was being used to shelter about 3,000 displaced Palestinians. A statement from United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon earlier Sunday stated that at least 10 Palestinians were killed in the attack.

The State Department statement noted that the coordinates of the school — and all U.N. facilities in Gaza — have been provided to the Israeli military. “We once again stress that Israel must do more to meet its own standards and avoid civilian casualties,” the statement read. “UN facilities…must be protected, and must not be used as bases from which to launch attacks,” pointing some blame at Hamas militants as well.

The State Department also called for a “full and prompt investigation of this incident as well as the recent shelling of other UNRWA schools.”
