The finances will go toward the countering of short-range rockets in 2014’s fiscal year, as well as the maintenance of interceptors and equipment, according to a statement from the office of White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest.

The funds supplement the $176 million requested in Obama’s 2015 budget for the Iron Dome, and the $175 Congressional increase proposed to offset the costs of initiating production in the U.S.

“The United States is proud that the Iron Dome system developed in coordination with Israel and funded by the United States has saved countless Israeli lives,” a statement reads. “Continued bipartisan support for Iron Dome funding ensures Israel will retain vital defense against rockets and artillery in light of the enduring threats.”

While representatives said the U.S. supports Israel’s right to defend itself from rocket attacks, they also called on Israeli authorities to take precaution in preventing further casualties in Gaza, as well as to ensure the protection of Palestinian civilians.
