The courtroom in Cairo erupted in cheers when the charges were dismissed, but many see it as another setback for the Tahrir Square revolution that ousted him from power.

Im 2011, protesters flooded to the streets in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, demanding an end to Mubarak’s 30-year rule. More than 900 protesters were killed over a three week period, before Mubarak eventually stepped down, handing over power to the country’s military.

Mubarak was accused of ordering the police and military to crackdown on the protesters, but a judge dismissed those charges saying Mubarak wasn’t to blame. Several of Mubarak’s top aids and security commanders were also acquitted.

The country is now ruled by General Abdul Fattah Al Sissi, while Mubarak’s autocratic state apparatus runs much the same way it did before the revolution.

Mubarak will remain in prison on separate chargers for embezzlement.
