The No.24 Thundering Herd allowed a Conference USA record eight passing touchdowns to Hilltoppers’ quarterback, Brandon Doughty. Marshall lost in overtime when Doughty found Willie McNeal for the game winning two-point conversion.

The two teams combined to throw 15 touchdown passes; another Conference USA record.

The loss puts Marshall at a huge disadvantage towards playing in either the Fiesta, Peach or Cotton bowl games. The College Football Playoff selection committee chooses one team from outside of the “Power Five” conferences to play in one of the preeminent games.  Before the loss sent Marshall’s record to 11-1, the Thundering Herd trailed Boise State in the committee’s rankings.
