The detainees include Asim Thabit Abdullah Al-Khalaqi, Muhammad Ali Husayn Khanayna, Sabri Muhammad Ibrahim Al Qurashi, Adel Al-Hakeemy, and Abdullah Bin Ali Al-Lufti.

“As directed by the president’s Jan. 22, 2009, executive order, the interagency Guantanamo Review Task Force conducted a comprehensive review of this case. As a result of that review, which examined a number of factors, including security issues, these men were unanimously approved for transfer by the six departments and agencies comprising the task force,” the DOD said in a statement late Tuesday.

The agency said the U.S. coordinated with Kazakhstan to ensure the transfers “took place consistent with appropriate security and humane treatment measures.”

As of Wednesday, 127 detainees remain at Guantanamo Bay.
