This trailer begins with a voiceover of Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark apparently pitching his teammates to approve an abandoned peacekeeping project that leads to the creation of an army of Iron Man-like drones deployed all over the word to keep evil at bay.

But the project spearheaded by Tony Stark and Mark Ruffalo’s Dr. Bruce Banner quickly goes sideways, when their tinkering leads to the creation of Ultron, a super-powerful sentient computer mind housed in an equally powerful, unbreakable armored body. “Everyone creates the thing they dread,” the mechanical menace says through the chilling voice of James Spader.

Ultron takes control of the drones and sets them loose with a new directive: to keep the peace by exterminating mankind. The development apparently sets some of the team members against Stark. “You’ve meddled with something you don’t understand,” warns Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, who picks Stark up by his throat.

What follows are scenes of the drones wreaking havoc in various locations in the world, Chris Evans’ powerful Captain America getting choked out by one of the drones, and of course more of the movie’s set-piece battle between Banner’s alter-ego The Hulk and Stark, encased in a giant Iron Man suit he dubbed Hulkbuster.

Age of Ultron’s
sneak peek also shows Samuel L. Jackson, Andy Serkis, Elizabeth Olsen, Jeremy Renner, and Scarlett Johansson — whose Black Widow is at one point seen as a younger woman, strapped to a gurney and injected in an apparent flashback sequence.

Avengers: Age of Ultron opens May 1.
