(SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico) — The Health Department of Puerto Rico declared a flu epidemic on Thursday.
A statement from Health Secretary Ana Rius Armendariz called for Puerto Ricans to unite their efforts to preserve public health and end the spread of the flu. More than 3,000 cases of the disease have been reported this year in Puerto Rico. At least 140 people have reportedly been hospitalized and at least one person has died from the flu.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s latest data shows 29 states plus Puerto Rico experiencing high levels of influenza-like illness activity.
