(SAN FRANCISCO, Ca.) — Within two weeks, the San Francisco 49ers have lost two inside linebackers to retirement.

Second year linebacker Chris Borland has decided to hang up his cleats due to fears of long term effects from head trauma. Borland delivered the news on ESPN’s Outside the Lines.

“I just honestly want to do what’s best for my health,” Borland explained. “From what I’ve researched and what I’ve experienced, I don’t think it’s worth the risk.”

Borland, 24, was a third-round draft pick of the 49ers last season and was expected to start for the team this season after Patrick Willis retired last week.

During training camp last year, Borland believes he suffered a concussion but played through it because he wanted to make the team.

Borland was a first-team All American at the University of Wisconsin.  He plans to re-enroll in school and pursue a career in sports management.
