(NEW YORK) — Pete Rose has applied for reinstatement to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred.

Commissioner Manfred stated that he will consider the appeal “on its merits.”

Rose accepted voluntary banishment from baseball in August of 1989 after a Sports Illustrated story proved that he had gambled on games while he was the manager of the Cincinnati Reds.

Rose has previously petitioned for reinstatement under previous commissioners Fay Vincent and Bud Selig, but was never considered.

From 1963 to 1986, Rose totaled 4,256 hits — making him the all-time leader in the category.

Reinstatement into the game would be the first step towards being nominated for the Baseball Hall of Fame. It is no sure thing that he would be nominated once he was reinstated, but it would give Rose his first chance as the Hall of Fame adopted rules in 1991 stating that no player on the banishment list could be considered for enshrinement.
