Poll: Netanyahu’s Likud Party in the Lead Ahead of Israeli Election

Uriel Sinai/Getty images(JERUSALEM) — With just eight days left until the Israeli election, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s party appears to have taken the lead.
For weeks, Netanyahu’s Likud party has been in a dead heat with Isaac Herzog’s Zionist Union party, but a new poll out Monday shows that the prime minister has opened a significant lead over his left-wing rival.
The i24 news poll gives the Likud party 26 seats — five more than the Zionist Union party.
Unlike the U.S., Israelis won’t choose a candidate when they head to the polls to elect a new government next Tuesday. Instead, they’ll choose a party. The leader of the party that wins is often the one who becomes prime minister after the president asks him or her to form a government.
In order for Netanyahu to win a fourth term in office, his Likud party needs to come out on top.
