Muhanad Mahmoud Al Farekh, an American citizen, allegedly conspired with others to “provide personnel to be used in support of efforts to kill American citizens and members of the U.S. military abroad,” the Department of Justice says. In 2007, he allegedly traveled from Canada to Pakistan with two co-conspirators with the intention of fighting against American forces.

“Today’s arrest demonstrates that there is no escape from the long reach of our law for American citizens who seek to do harm to our country on behalf of violent terrorists,” U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch said.

The DOJ says that if convicted, Al Farekh could face up to 15 years in jail.

Al Farekh appeared in a Brooklyn federal court on Thursday. He was ordered to be held until his next court appearance next month.
