According to the Metropolitan Police Service, approximately 60-70 boxes are believed to have been opened. The forensic examination of the scene could take about two days, police say.
Officers are working with Hatton Garden Safety Deposit, Ltd. to determine who was impacted by the burglary.
Robbers used heavy cutting equipment to break into a vault containing the safety deposit boxes. Jeweler Michael Miller tells ABC News that many jewelers and dealers had put their stock into boxes over the holiday weekend. In order to become a safety deposit holder, Miller said, “you have to be referred by the people, so it’s quite a close community and it’s mainly just the jewelers.”
“They keep their stock locked up here, so they’ll keep it in the store, they’ll work with it during the day, when they close the shop at 5:30, they’ll take their boxes and boxes of diamonds,” Miller added.
It wasn’t clear what items had been taken, or how much they were worth.
