Published at | Updated at(ST. ANDREWS, Scotland) — An amateur holds a share of the lead through three rounds at the British Open.
Paul Dunne, a 22-year-old from Ireland, is tied with two others at 12-under par through 54 holes after the final two rounds were pushed back by weather delays. No amateur has won The Open since 1930, when Bobby Jones did it.
Dunne, Louis Oosthuizen and Jason Day each finished their third rounds at 12-under. Day also held a share of the lead at the U.S. Open, the previous major tournament.
The final round will tee off on Monday with a number of contenders, including American Jordan Spieth, who has won each of the two majors thus far this year. Spieth finished Sunday just one shot back of the lead.
After Sunday’s third round, 14 players were separated by just three shots, including nine tied at nine-under par.
Dustin Johnson, who entered the third round with the lead, finished Sunday three-over par to fall five shots behind.
