At Least 115 Killed in Iraq Suicide Blast
Published at | Updated at(BAGHDAD) — ISIS militants are claiming responsibility for a suicide attack in Iraq that killed at least 115 people.
Around 170 additional people were also wounded in the blast on Saturday, which local police said was a truck loaded with explosives that detonated in a crowded marketplace.
The blast targeted Iraqis celebrating the end of the holy month of Ramadan in the eastern province of Diyala.
Those killed by the bombing were mostly Shiite, including women and children.
The religiously mixed Diyala Province has been the scene of continuous fighting, pitting the Islamic State against Iraqi Security Forces and Kurdish fighters.
Over the last year, the extremist group has tried unsuccessfully to convince prominent Sunni tribes in the province to join them.
