Layton, UT — Police have a man in custody they say forced a woman into her Layton apartment and then assaulted her with various objects for the next 20 hours while she was in and out of consciousness.

Officers said 21-year-old Benjamin Luke Burnside kidnapped a woman he knew Aug. 4 and then assaulted her from 11 p.m. through 7 p.m. the next day, according to KSTU Fox 13 News.

According to official documents, Burnside strangled the woman until she was unconscious several times.

Documents state he beat her with a golf club, a piece of metal from the refrigerator and taped her mouth shut.

Authorities said the woman tried to call 911 more than once but Burnside took the phone and allegedly threatened to kill her.

Police said the woman was eventually able to convince Burnside to leave the apartment with her but he told her where to drive.

Officers said the woman somehow escaped from the car in Layton.

According to the documents, Burnside stole $80 and the woman’s make up bag.

Burnside is facing felony charges including aggravated kidnapping and aggravated burglary.

Officials said he has a criminal history which includes felony drug charges, domestic violence and assault.
