The Santa Clara Police Department posted to its Twitter account on Friday that Smith was also accused of hit and run and vandalism in the Thursday night incident.

The 49ers announced Friday afternoon that they had released Smith. Head coach Jim Tomsula called it “a sad day,” and “a day that doesn’t have anything to do about football.”

Still, Tomsula said, “although he won’t be playing football for the San Francisco 49ers, he will be supported, and he will be helped…he won’t have to walk this path alone.”

Smith had previous off-the-field issues, including a 2012 arrest on suspicion of DUI that was reduced to reckless driving, a trio of weapons charges related to a 2012 party at his home, a second DUI in 2013 and an arrest for acting uncooperatively at Los Angeles International Airport last year. Smith was also suspended by the NFL for the first nine game of last season for violations of the league’s personal conduct and substance abuse policies.
