Precinct changes require new polling locations

About half of the registered voters in Bonneville County will be voting at a new location this November. It’s a move county officials have been considering for several years.

Due to population shifts, overlapping boundaries and consolidated elections, the county’s adjustment of boundaries affect 27,000 registered voters.

Bonneville County Commissioner Roger Christensen said major disparities existed between some of the precincts.

“As population shifts — and we’ve had some areas of quite a bit of growth in the county — we ended up with some precincts that were like 1,500 registered voters, and some that were 400 registered voters,” Christensen said.

Adjustments were also needed due to election consolidations mandated at the state level.

“When the Legislature passed consolidated elections that was kind of a significant change because now we are required to do all of the elections for all the school districts and everybody else and run them at the same time,” Christensen added.

Bonneville County Clerk Ron Longmore said overlapping districts created further incentive to clean things up.

“We tried to, as closely as possible, to try to align precincts with school district boundaries and school trustee zone boundaries and other boundaries as much as possible,” Longmore said.

Christensen said the voters will only be affected in where they cast their ballots.
