NFL Suspends Aldon Smith for a Year Under Substance Abuse Policy
Published at | Updated at(OAKLAND, Calif.) — Aldon Smith is out for a year.
The National Football League is suspending the Oakland Raiders linebacker for a year without pay on Tuesday, according to ESPN.
The suspension, under the NFL’s substance-abuse policy, comes after the 25-year-old pleaded not guilty in September to misdemeanor counts of hit-and-run, DUI, and vandalism from an incident in August.
“Under the terms of the policy, Smith will be eligible to apply for reinstatement no sooner than 60 days before the one-year anniversary of the suspension,” the NFL said in a statement.
Smith has barely been with the Raiders for a season. After his arrest in August, and third DUI, he was ousted from the San Francisco 49ers after four seasons.
