Voters approve District 93 school bonds

IDAHO FALLS — Both of Bonneville Joint School District 93’s bonds to build new facilities passed in the election Tuesday, Nov. 3.

A $55.3 million bond to build a new high school passed with 73 percent of the vote, and an additional $8.2 million measure to build a performing arts center and athletic stadium at the new high school passed with 68 percent of the vote. Both bonds needed a 66.67 percent supermajority to pass.

The larger bond will fund construction of a 1,500-student capacity high school with a core capacity of 1,800 for future growth.

This was the fourth time the issue was brought to a vote. The school district has repeatedly said it needs a new high school because of overcrowding issues.

The larger, 17.5-year bond will increase property taxes by a projected $1.75 per month per $100,000 of a home’s taxable value.

The approval of an additional $8.2 million bond will further the construction of a performing arts center and stadium, bringing the total bond value to $63.5 million and increasing taxes by $2.92 monthly.

When the bond was voted on in May, the final result was 66.5 percent in favor of the bond, just 17 votes shy of the required percentage to pass.
