Survival Medical: Preserving medical supplies for every crisis

RIGBY — When it comes to preparedness, people often worry about storing food and water, but not medical supplies, a local natural health expert said.

Jon Roberts, founder of Survival Medical, is serving the untapped niche of medical supply storage. He’s discovered how to preserve the functionality of items like cotton gauze or triple-antibiotic ointment so people could use them right away, or years down the road.

“We started working about two and a half years ago to engineer a packaging system that would prolong the shelf life of medical supplies so we could have that same convenience as food storage,” Roberts said.

Since consumers are more prone to using food storage over medical supplies, Roberts believes the conservation of medical material may be more than essential.

“I eat three times a day, so I can cycle through my food storage, but medical supplies? I hope I don’t have a medical emergency three times a day,” Roberts said.

The secret behind the lengthy storage is keeping the item devoid of light, heat, oxygen and moisture. Survival Medical uses a high-quality plastic reflective material to preserve the medical contents.

After the package is open, the heavy-duty zip seal on all of the kits can still enable preservation.

Roberts says his company manufactures quality, lasting kits that are more affordable than most medical suppliers. He says they carry items needed for extreme burns, broken legs, hemorrhaging or even emergency births.

“Our backcountry kit has got moleskin, emergency blankets, non-adherent dressings, non-woven sponge, wound closure strips …” Roberts said. “If you’re comparing this to other companies, you’re getting a real, legit, high-quality first aid kit.”

Lincoln Zitlau, assistant to Roberts, says the product is something he hasn’t seen on the market, and is definitely one of the best options for emergency and survival.

“I think it will be a very popular product for people who like to be outdoors, and people that just like to be prepared,” Zitlau said.

More than anything Roberts said he wants to make sure others are taken care of during a medical emergency.

“This is stuff I believe people should have… So we’ve priced it as such. We want our friends and neighbors to be prepared,” Roberts said.
