Scouts gearing up for Jamboral — one of largest adventures of the summer

IDAHO FALLS – Thousands of boys and hundreds of Scout leaders and volunteers are gearing up for one of the largest camping excursions of the summer.

“We are going to have a whole variety of activities to do, I guess that’s what makes the Jamboral so exciting,” Scout Executive and CEO of Grand Teton Council Clarke Farrer said.

The Grand Teton Council of the Boy Scouts of America is hosting the 2016 Jamboral on May 20 and 21. The Jamboral takes place every few years and this year’s camp will be held at Camp Stolworthy in Firth.

The Jamboral is a chance for boys to attend a gigantic Scouting adventure similar to the Boys Scout National Jamboree. The Jamboree brings in 40,000 Scouts from across the nation.

About 3,000 boys from communities across the region are expected to take part in this year’s overnight encampment. The Grand Teton Council oversees Scouting troops and operations in east Idaho, western Wyoming and southwestern Montana.

A number of activities will be held at the Jamboral — a climbing tower with a zip line, a mud run, BMX bike riding, archery and shotgun skeet shooting.

Farrer said the goal of the event is to bring boys from all over to take part in outdoor activities that help them in their development as Scouts. He said they are sticking to the Boy Scout oath of staying fit, mentally awake and morally straight.

“The purpose is to develop character and leadership, and bringing boys together and having them cooperate and participate in different in events,” Farrer said.

All Boy Scout troops, Varsity teams, Venture crews, and Explorer posts are invited to participate. The theme for this year’s event is “Celebrate God’s Creations,” in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of the National Park System of America, according to a Grand Teton Council news release.

Scouts can get information about the Jamboral at the Grand Teton Council’s website, TetonScouts.org. The normal registration fee of $20 per Scout will be honored until April 15. Registration any time after will be $22.
