RIGBY — A GoFundMe account has been set up for a man who was accidentally shot by a toddler last weekend.

Travis Sorensen, 25, was helping a friend move on Saturday, March 26. During the move he went into the basement to take a nap. He was awoken by a loud noise and pain in his foot.

A child in the room above Sorensen fired the gun into the floor, it ricocheted off a window sill and struck his foot, according to the Rigby Police Department.

Sorensen was rushed to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls. X-Rays showed two bones in his foot were fractured and his pinky toe was shattered, according to the GoFundMe page. He will be undergoing surgery to fix his shattered toe using bone taken from his hip.

The gun fired by the toddler was originally between two mattresses in a bed. It had been placed on the floor by other movers when the bed had been disassembled. Rigby Police classified the shooting as an accident and no one has been charged.

The GoFundMe page was created to help Sorensen’s family. Family members say he is expected to be out-of-work for six weeks due to the injury.

“Our family has been so grateful and humbled by this experience,” sister Amy Sorensen Abel said on the GoFundMe page. “Words can’t even describe the love, help and concern that has already been given by so many. We are very thankful for any help in this time of need.”
