IF teen and friend with viral ‘promposal’ dubbed prom royalty

IDAHO FALLS — Two high school seniors who had all of east Idaho gushing over their “promposal” in April had the prom celebration of their lives Saturday. They were even crowned prom king and queen.

Earlier in April, Kolten Westergard asked his friend Katherine Tyler, a girl with spina bifida, to be his date to prom.

“She was really excited and happy,” said Lori Tyler, Katherine’s mom.

Kolten said he took Katherine to a local shop called Possibly Picasso, a place where guests decorate and paint pottery. It was reminiscent of when Kolten asked Katherine to prom in pottery class.

Afterward, as Katherine was getting ready for prom, she got more enthusiastic for the big dance, Lori said.

“She started getting a little more excited, like, ‘OK, this is really happening.’ She was a little more relaxed and cheerful about it — she wasn’t so stressed anymore,” Lori said.

She said one of the sweetest parts of the night was when Kolten saw Katherine in her dress for the first time.

“She blushed big time when (Kolten) came in and told her she looked beautiful in her dress,” Lori said.

Later in the night, Kolten said, “We were heading out to the car and one of my teachers came running out and (said), ‘You better come back in for a minute.’ … we ended up being the prom king and queen.”

It was a title neither of them expected.

Kolten said it was a night he would never forget.

“We went to the dance, and we had a good time,” he said. “It was a great night.”
